EBMC's PRESIDENT/COO STEPHEN BURGER RECEIVES TOP REAL ESTATE HONORS

Steve Burger recently received the highest honor awarded to a property management professional in the Bay Area, The Frankly H. "Jeff" Lyons Award for Career Service by the Institute of Real Estate management (IREM). This is the highest honor for professionalism awarded by the Bay Area Chapter of IREM which covers 11 counties and has over 500 members.

This award is not made by the Chapter every year and is reserved for instances when the Officers of the Chapter believe it to be appropriate. The last award was made four years prior.

Ceremonies in San Francisco were held December 15, 2002 in recognition of Outstanding Career Service to the Chapter, its Membership and the Property Management Profession.

A Certified Property Manager (CPM) and Certified Shopping Center Manager (CSM), Burger served as president of the area IREM Chapter in 1997. He has also held numerous positions with local and national property management associations.

Mr. Burger's company manages residential and commercial property in California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Florida. EBMC, an Accredited Management Organization (AMO) company, has also been honored by the property managers' group.

AHMA Poster Contest Nets Two Winners

The Affordable Housing Management Association (AHMA) publishes a calendar every year that is illustrated by talented young artists. The artwork – with an anti-drug theme – gives creative youngsters all across the nation a chance to show off their skills and perhaps win a scholarship at the same time.

The 2004 calendar features the artwork of two residents from an EBMC-managed property.

Bozica Music, Resident Manager of the Santa Clara Terrace Apartments, has for several years been a big supporter of the AHMA poster contest. In past years, she was able to encourage more participants from her site to take part in the contest than any other location. Last year, she noted, there were 24 youngsters who prepared posters for the competition. The effort paid off, as there has been one winner from Santa Clara Terrace every year for the past four years. This year, however, only three youngsters created submissions, and yet two of them became national winners.

For one of the winners – 18-year-old Liliya Timonichev – it was a repeat performance, as she also won the contest in 2001. The other winner is Megana Bahtt, 13. The children receive cash scholarships for their efforts, Music noted.

In Southern California, participation was terrific. At Coachella Valley Apartments, 46 youngsters submitted entries, while there were 14 entries submitted from both Voorhis Village Apartments and Town and Country, according to Bill Baker, Vice President of the Santa Ana Area office.

EBMC EMPLOYEE EARNS U.S. CITIZENSHIP

Ilya Lyubarskiy, Maintenance Team Member at The Headlands in Marin County, officially became a citizen of the United States on June 19, 2002. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1994 from Uzbekistan. Ilya was honored for his accomplishment at the recent Northern California employee picnic, when Lori Burger, Vice President, Property Manager, introduced him to the gathering before awarding him with a special recognition.
Also in honor of Ilya's accomplishment, Henno Heitur, Site Manager at The Headlands, wrote an article for the homeowner association's newsletter, which is excerpted here.

"Ilya grew up in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, near Afghanistan, under the blanket of Soviet Communism. For more than 25 years he was an engineer and thermodynamic technician for a huge power station. "While a Soviet citizen, Ilya was twice detained by the KGB for protesting the invasion of Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan." After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Henno said, Ilya feared for his family's safety so they emigrated to the U.S. "The expensive process exhausted his family's life savings. Because of his age and language challenges, he struggled to find suitable work."

In 1996, Ilya was offered a job at EBMC., working part-time work as a groundskeeper. He was promoted to a full-time position where, in addition to his groundskeeping duties, he was also working as an electrician, plumber, painter and carpenter at The Headlands.

"Among his many accomplishments," Henno's article continued, "is that he has almost single-handedly expanded and kept our firebreaks clear of brush over the past couple of years, which has substantially improved our ability to fend off future wildfires."

"Ilya is one of the most dedicated men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with," Henno said. "Ilya represents the type of can-do immigrant from American history who helped to build this country into what it is today."
