California owners are required to install Carbon Monoxide Detectors in existing Single Family Homes on July 1, 2011.
The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010 requires that existing single family homes have carbon monoxide detectors installed by July 1, 2011. Other existing dwelling units must have carbon monoxide detectors installed by January 1, 2013. Senate Bill 183 (Lowenthal), signed into law May 7, 2010 by Governor Schwarzenegger, is designed to protect California residents from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is a deadly colorless, odorless and tasteless gas produced when carbon-based fuels are burned in an enclosed space without proper ventilation. Sources could be natural gas, wood, oil, barbecue briquettes, etc. used in furnaces, hot water heaters, barbecues and the like. As an example, this is the reason you should use a briquette fueled barbecue indoors;
